How to incorporate our skill trainings within your program.
If you have read our other articles about programming or recovery and started following our programs (or your own), you might wonder how you are supposed to make a skill training fit in.
Since our programs are already complete and train the whole body with a fixed number of rest days and planned active recovery, it would be indeed unsafe or at least counter-productive to simply add a skill workout to it.
We therefore recommend that you follow a maximum of 2 skill trainings at a time and replace some of your program workouts (or workout parts) with the relevant skill training phases. What we mean by relevant skill training phases is that if you are going to follow a skill training that trains a lower body part, you should replace a lower body workout with it.
Examples:
If you are learning the pull-up, you should replace the pulling exercises of a workout with the pull-up phase you are currently training.
If you are learning the pistol squat, you should replace the leg exercises of a workout with the current pistol squat phase. If your program trains legs and core on the same day, you should still perform the core exercises of that day.
If you want to learn the muscle-up, it would be a good to idea to replace an entire upper body workout with your current muscle-up phase since this move requires both pulling and pushing exercises.
Another important point is the frequency at which you should train skills. We recommend training a phase only once a week. This will give your body enough time to recover and will allow your other workouts to support your progress with complementary exercises.
Another reason to train a skill only once a week is to make sure you don’t develop any imbalance by training some parts of your body more than others.
Also please keep in mind that training the same phase more than once a week will be unlikely to make you reach your goal sooner. Complementary exercises from your regular program will be much more effective for your progress.
